Growing up in a feudal castle town called Tsu, Yoshiyuki Konishi was born into a long family line, operating a hand crafted kimono store. From childhood, Konishi was surrounded by clothes, " Konishi recalls. "A trip for me meant accompanying my mother on her buying trip, to Kyoto to select gorgeous obis, or to a trade show to look at hundreds of kimono fabrics." Yoshiyuki Konishi would go on to start his own label in 1981, specializing in the creation of tapestry sweaters at first. With an eye for color and design that undoubtedly stemmed from his youthful experience, Konishi expanded to New York fashion week showings by 1997. Today, Yoshiyuki Konishi’s designs continue on by enthusiasts and collectors who have managed to keep his legacy alive.
