Much like many other Japanese labels of the time period, Tornado Mart pulls heavy referencing from traditional Americana, a fascination that originally stemmed from the U.S’s military occupation in Japan following World War II. Masterfully blurring the lines between Japanese punk style and Western aesthetics, Tornado Mart’s establishment in 1993 by parent company Spic International became a massive success in the years following their launch. Amassing nearly 50 retail stores scattered throughout Japan, the label continues to expand and push their womenswear accomplice, Tornado Mart Femme, to new heights.
