A Bathing Ape

A Bathing Ape, or BAPE, is a Japanese streetwear brand that was founded in 1993 by Nigo. Popularized by their camo prints and its iconic Ape Head logo, Bape is a brand deeply rooted in culture, referencing from the past to create some of the most renowned pieces in street culture. Nigo’s fascination with Western society, specifically pertaining to style and music bled through his initial work, in which the name ‘A Bathing Ape’, refers to the 1968 film ‘Planet of The Apes’. Growing his brand as a teenager at his part-owned shop ‘Nowhere Store’, in Harajuku Japan, Nigo sold off his ownership of Bape in 2013, leading to a decline in original design following his departure.
