In 2005, Supreme released a graphic t-shirt featuring stockbroker Igor Kotlyar as he’s arrested in a box logo. The original image was taken in 2003, after FBI detectives busted Kotlyar and his crew for bilking $2.5 million in fraudulent software shares. As a result, the ensemble was hauled into federal court on 51 counts of conspiracy and security crimes, as well as wire and mail fraud. Via telephone, the five ‘brokers’ were able to trick 31 investors into buying company shares, finding Kotlyar guilty with 5 years of prison and an additional 36 months of home confinement. Violating these terms, he would then serve an additional 9 months of imprisonment, paying hundreds of thousands in restitution and fines. This event would spark Supreme’s infamous slogan ‘Illegal Business Controls America’, which debuted on the underside of the t-shirt. 📝@archivethreads
