Gianni Versace grew up in southern Italy, getting his first hands-on experience with fashion at a young age, aiding his mother with her sewing business. It was through this early exposure that Gianni Versace would grow to love fashion, developing his first complete dress at the tender age of nine. In 1972, Gianni Versace designed his debut collections, which were overseen by the labels he was hired by. Following the success of the next six years, Gianni Versace would make the ultimate leap of faith in 1978 to found his own eponymous label. Versace would go on to produce some of the most iconic collections and a body of nearly 20 years of breathtaking work, reaching the peak of its height in the 1990’s. In 1997, Gianni Versace was tragically assassinated outside of his own home, shot twice in the back of the head from point blank range.
This jacket is an iconic piece of Versace’s brand history, featuring various 1930’s and 40’s actresses in broadway advertisements, done of course in a signature Versace gold. The Medusa head logo that we all naturally correlate to Versace does not make an appearance on these pieces, as it was only in 1993 that Gianni Versace would begin to utilize this branding. It is for this reason that many of the pre-1993 Versace pieces have such a tasteful vibrance to them, as there was no desire to push a branded emblem. Coming in a size 27 inch waist, this piece is in pristine overall condition. Here is the opportunity to purchase an incredible piece from Gianni Versace’s time at the helm of his eponymous company.
