Martin Margiela remains a fashion forefather, avant-garde pioneer and symbol of the anti-fashion circuit. Swimming against the current of haute couture in the late 1980’s, Margiela reworked the seams of the fashion industry in spite of previously retained social norms. The creative worked in conjunction with his team to deconstruct each and every preconceived notion of wearable art, crafting pieces far ahead of their time. Margiela built a new understanding of clothing behind a wall of intense anonymity, letting each piece speak for both itself and the Maison. Martin Margiela questioned the industry and in turn the audience, making for enthralling collections over many decades.

Margin Margiela’s obsession with paint and the beauty of garments wearing down over time to reveal their true colors is a recurring theme used from some of his earliest collections to his final years before departing his eponymous label in 2009. This particular jacket from Spring Summer 2007 is an incredible example of this Margiela staple, with a black leather cowhide revealing itself slowly, under a painted brown and red exterior. Slowly cracking to showcase natural wear and the layering of paint beneath, it’s pieces like this that make Martin Margiela one of my favorites of all time. Coming in an incredibly rare size 54 (extra large) this piece is in amazing overall condition.
