Jean Paul Gautlier’s first introduction to fashion began at an early age, sharing a common interest with his maternal grandmother Marrie Garebbe. Never pursuing an education in fashion, Gaultier’s alternative was to send sketches to couture stylists in the hopes of getting their attention. Famed designer Pierre Cardin was ecstatic to see the work of young Gaultier, hiring him as an assistant and the rest is history. Taking massive strides in blending androgyny, Gaultier’s work broke down societal barriers of structural normaties in fashion. Receiving the title of the Chevalier de la Légion d’Honneur (“Knight of the Legion of Honor”) in 2001, Gaultier’s contribution to our culture is one that will sorely be missed following his departure from design in 2020.
Gaultier obsession with German/American model Marlene Dietrich stems from her nonconforming stance on traditional gender roles. The 1930’s actress was famously arrested in Paris for wearing men’s trousers and was quoted stating ‘I am at heart a gentleman’. Paying homage to one of his largest adolescent icons, Gaultier depicts Dietrich with a trompe loeil spiraling design. This skirt has the stretch fit of Gaultier’s ‘Maille’ (mesh) line of clothing, with a much more secure and less transparent appearance. Coming in a size 40, this skirt is in pristine overall condition with no flaws. Here is the chance to purchase a true museum piece from Gaultier’s Autumn Winter 2001 affectionate homage to Marlene Dietrich.
